Quick Summary: Contemporary decorative vases are one of the most versatile pieces you can add to a room, and you don’t need a design degree to style one well. Below, I walk through how I style them in the shop, how to pick the right material, and my picks for ceramic, glass, and one-of-a-kind vases for your home or office.

A customer once brought in a vase she’d had for fifteen years and asked what she could do with it besides let it collect dust on a shelf. Turns out, a lot.

Contemporary decorative vases are not only eye-catching on their own, they’re one of the most versatile home decor items you can own. A clean, modern vase works anywhere in your home or office, and it doesn’t take much to turn it into a real accent piece.

Contemporary Doesn’t Mean Complicated

Most contemporary-style vases are beautiful on their own. In my experience, they become true works of art with just a few stems added: orchids, calla lilies, or anything with a clean, upscale line to it.

Traditional flowers like roses or lilies work just as well. Or skip flowers entirely and drop in a floating candle instead. It’s an easy swap that changes the whole feel of the piece.

What I use in the shop: a floating candle like this one. It gives a bare vase a finished look in about thirty seconds, no flowers required.

Group Your Vases for a Bigger Impact

Grouped contemporary vases arranged as a tablescape centerpiece

One of the simplest ways to get more mileage out of vases you already own is to group several together, similar to the photo above.

If you’re worried that mixing several different vase styles together will look cluttered instead of curated, don’t be. The trick is picking one thing to repeat, whether that’s a single flower variety or a single color, so your eye has something to tie it all together.

Grouping vases is also one of the easiest centerpiece ideas you can pull together for any occasion, from a weeknight dinner to a full wedding reception. I’ve built out the same mixing principle in more detail in my Friendsgiving table guide, if you want to see it applied to an actual tablescape.

I’m pretty certain you already have a vase or two sitting around the house doing nothing. Put them to work.

This video shows a few more ideas using plain square glass vases, which are some of the cheapest and most useful vases you can own.

Choose the Right Vase Material for the Room

Ceramic, glass, and hardwood vases compared side by side

What makes choosing the right vase so hard is the nearly limitless choice of designs, colors, and styles out there. That’s also what makes finding the perfect one so satisfying once you land on it.

Ceramic, glass, and hardwood are my favorite vase materials, in that order. Each brings something different to a room: ceramic hides water and stems, glass shows them off, and hardwood adds warmth that neither of the other two can.

Not every decorative vase is built to hold water. If you’re planning to use fresh flowers, check that the vase is non-porous and won’t leak before you fill it. That’s an easy detail to miss, and a wet shelf isn’t worth it.

When I’m choosing decorative vases for the shop, I look for pieces that are unique, versatile, and functional. Pictured here is one of my favorites: a multi-tube ceramic vase that works as an accent almost anywhere in a home or office.

These contemporary ceramic vases come in a range of styles and colors. It’s a new twist on the traditional bud vase, built to hold a single stem or several, which makes it an easy way to add a dash of color exactly where you need it.

Mix a few of them, match them, or line them up down the center of a table for an instant tablescape.

What I use in the shop: this multi-tube ceramic vase. One vase does the work of several bud vases, and it looks intentional instead of mismatched.

If that particular vase isn’t your style, browse the full ceramic vase collection here. You’ll find the right vase at the right price.

Find One-of-a-Kind Vases Without Overpaying

Browsing one-of-a-kind vases at a vintage shop

Whenever I want something a little unusual, I check eBay before anywhere else. There are always decorative vases listed there, and many of them are one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find on a shelf at a big-box store.

I’ve found a few hidden gems this way, and some of them at prices that were a genuine steal.

What I’d do: if I only had ten dollars to spend and thirty minutes to browse, I’d skip the home decor aisle entirely and go straight to eBay. You’ll pay less, and you’re a lot more likely to walk away with something nobody else on the block has.

Here are a few examples of what’s available right now, if you want to see what I mean.

A vase with nothing in it is really just an expensive dust catcher. These ideas are the easiest way I know to change that.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a vase “contemporary” instead of traditional?
Clean lines, minimal detailing, and a simple silhouette. A contemporary vase relies on shape and material rather than ornate patterns or texture to make its statement, which is exactly what makes it so easy to style.

Can any decorative vase hold real flowers?
No. Some decorative vases are made purely for display and aren’t sealed to hold water. Check that a vase is non-porous before you fill it with fresh flowers, or you’ll end up with a wet shelf and a short-lived arrangement.

How many vases should I group?
Three or five tends to look more intentional than two or four. Odd numbers read as a collection; even numbers tend to look like a pair that’s missing its match.

What’s the easiest way to style a vase without fresh flowers?
A floating candle. It fills the space, adds a little light, and takes about thirty seconds to set up. No watering, no wilting, no upkeep.

Where’s the best place to find a unique or one-of-a-kind vase?
eBay, in my experience. I’ve found more interesting pieces there than anywhere else, often at better prices than a retail shelf.

Final Thoughts

Contemporary vases don’t ask for much. Give one a few good stems, a candle, or just a few of its own kind standing next to it, and it’ll do the rest of the work for you.
