Customers call the shop almost every September asking for “some fall flowers” without knowing or naming a single variety. That’s fine by me. Most people shop by color and mood, not botany, and fall has one of the richest palettes to work with.
Here’s the short list of blooms I reach for most between September and Thanksgiving, what each brings to an arrangement, and how to combine them into a palette that doesn’t look like a grab bag.
Start With Mums, the Workhorse of Fall

Spray mums do more work per dollar than almost any other fall flower. They’re full, inexpensive, and they hold up for a week to ten days in a cool room, longer than most of what’s available this time of year.
Rust, burgundy, and gold varieties read as classically autumnal. White and cream mums work harder than people expect, too, especially when paired with darker material like dahlias or eucalyptus.
What I’d do: Buy spray mums and cremones, and buy more than you think you need. A single full stem of spray mums does the visual work of several cremones. Using both gives you a fuller bouquet, and you’ll spend less filling in gaps with cheaper filler flowers.

Add Dahlias When You Want Bold, Big Blooms

I reach for dahlias when an arrangement needs a real focal point. They come in nearly every fall shade, from soft blush to a red so deep it edges toward black, and the bloom size alone carries a design.
The tradeoff is vase life. Dahlias run five to seven days, shorter than mums, so I add them a little later if I’m building an arrangement ahead of an event rather than the day of.
If you’re chasing a deep burgundy or near-black dahlia specifically for a moodier look, I go deeper on sourcing those varieties in the best black flowers for Halloween arrangements.

Marigolds and Sunflowers Bring the True Orange

If someone hands me a photo and says “that orange,” they’re usually picturing marigolds. Marigolds give you a saturated, true orange that mums and dahlias don’t quite match, plus they hold up well in warm rooms.
Sunflowers, on the other hand, are the biggest single statement flower in this whole list. One or two stems anchor an arrangement on their own, making them useful when you want impact without buying in bulk.
What I use in the shop: a pair of floral snips specifically for sunflowers. Their stems are thicker and more fibrous than most cut flowers, and regular shears crush the stems instead of cutting cleanly.

Round Out the Palette With Asters, Celosia, and Berries

Asters give you texture and volume without stealing attention from your focal flowers. They come in purples and deep pinks that bridge summer and fall, and a single bunch fills a lot of visual space for not much money.
Celosia, especially the plume and cockscomb varieties, adds a velvety texture nothing else on this list has. Hypericum berries do the opposite. They are small, structural, and fill gaps between your bigger blooms without adding bulk.
All three also dry well if you want part of the arrangement to outlast the fresh material. I cover that approach in more detail in dried and preserved flowers for a gothic Halloween look, and the same logic applies to any fall arrangement, not just Halloween ones.
Build a Cohesive Palette, Not Just a Flower List

Knowing the flowers is half the job. The other half is picking three or four colors and sticking to them, instead of buying one of everything that looks autumnal.
My go-to fall combination is rust, burgundy, and gold, with a little deep green eucalyptus to keep it from looking flat. Swap gold for cream for a softer shade, or add a single dark accent, black dahlia or dark celosia, for more drama.
Once you’ve settled on a palette, the flowers do most of the work themselves. I used that exact rust-burgundy-gold combination across eight different builds in my fall floral centerpiece roundup, and it’s the same starting palette behind my fall basket arrangement and burlap-ribbon fall arrangement tutorials, if you want to see the flower list turned into an actual build.
Frequently Asked Questions
What fall flowers last the longest in a vase?
Mums are the longest-lasting flowers on this list, typically seven to ten days with fresh water and a cool room. Asters and hypericum berries come in close behind. Dahlias and sunflowers are shorter-lived, usually five to seven days.
What are the classic fall flower colors?
Rust, burgundy, gold, and deep orange form the core palette most people picture. Deep purple and cream pair well as a secondary color if you want the arrangement to feel less one-note.
Can I mix fall flowers with summer leftovers like zinnias or cosmos?
Yes, and I do this often in early fall when both are still available. Just keep the color palette consistent. A rust-toned zinnia reads as fall; a bright pink one fights with everything around it.
Where should I buy fall flowers?
A local florist is your best source for anything beyond mums and sunflowers, especially for specific dahlia varieties or naturally dark celosia. Grocery store selections cover the basics but rarely go deeper than a handful of colors.
Do any of these dried fall flowers work well?
Celosia, hypericum berries, and statice all dry well and hold their color for months. Mums and dahlias don’t dry cleanly, so treat those as your fresh, shorter-lived material and lean on the others for anything that needs to last.
Closing Thoughts
You don’t need to memorize a botany textbook to buy good fall flowers. Learn these six, pick a palette of three or four colors, and stick to it. Everything else is just arranging.
Tell me in the comments: which fall flower do you always come back to, mums, dahlias, or something further down this list?
Every good fall arrangement starts the same way a good garden does, with a handful of the right seeds and the patience to let them work together.
Til next time,
